As we make the attempt to reduce costs, one cannot help be focus on the cost of Heatlh Care Insurance.

The impact of smoking is well documented in terms of its negative impact on heatlh.

Is there any company in the MAPP network that is taking aggressive steps to improve workplace health by cracking down on smoking habits?

Our company has taken very aggressive steps to help our employees achieve a better heatlh balance.  We adminster a wellness program with a visiting nurse system to help our employees.

In addition, we have changed our smoking policies and have banded smoking from our company grounds.  If you are caught smoking on company property, it is grounds for immediate termination.

Scott,

What percentage of your employees smoked prior to implementation of your smoking ban?  Did this encourage any of them to quit smoking?  Did it affect employee morale?

Mike-
About 50% smoked prior to the change.  We went through an extensive "stop smoking" program including paying for gum, patches, etc.  It did encourage them to quit.  Many quit completely while others cut back significantly.  Morale for the nonsmokers went up since everyone got a more equal amount of break time.  Most of the smokers understood even though a few still grumble a bit.

At YIP we have banned smoking in the building and at present it is allowable only at the back of our building. We are looking at a a complete company grounds ban. We are having our first Health Fair this year (November) and this ban will fit nicely with our goal of helping our employees acheive their "best health".
