We are looking to make improvements to our safety program to increase awareness in the plant. I am interested in learning what safety councils or networks you are currently utilizing to obtain safety tips, alerts, new program ideas and other resources to assist you with providing the most current information.

We are a COSE member (Council of Smaller Enterprise) which is a similar organization to MAPP but goes across all industries in Ohio. They sponsor the NEOSC (Northeast Ohio Safety Council) which we are a member of as well. These monthly meetings each have a different topic but provide the information you mentioned in your question. It is a valuable resource as some of the topics include BWC and OSHA updates, emergency preparedness, claims mgmt, and safety program tips. You may want to reach out locally, or even regionally to see if there is something similar in your area.

Kassy we are a small company in Southern Indiana and we use a Small Consulting Firm to help us stay compliant.  The comapany is STAC (Safety Training and Consulting). The contact is Bill Pfister 812-634-1188.  If you call and they do not answer leave a message.  In conjunction with this we also send folks to the safety training provided through the Indiana Chamber of commerce.

Hope that helps.

We have used JJ Keller online database.  It is a very comprehensive system that keeps you on top of OSHA requirements, helps with Safety rule publication, provides training guidance, and has a very comprehensive MSDS database.

We have focused on a cost functional internal team that meets monthly to review safety issues and improvement areas. We also focus on safety days without a lost time accident and reward the whole company when we reach 250 days increments. We are currently over 3,000 days without a lost time accident. It does mean you have to be very diligent and flexible with return to work policies.

My experience is that safety is driven by upper management/ownership and if they make it a priority and focus the appropriate resources on it you should see results.

At YIP we have a "state certified" Safety Committee which is a big deal in PA. Our insurance carrier works with us to drive our workers comp mod down and they sometimes attend our monthly committee meetings. They are very pro-active in helping us acheive safety awareness and ultimately cost savings. Each month we pick a topic relevent to our factory and share with our employees. In most cases this info sharing will be mandatory. The carrier has movies and other items to share with us to enhance awareness. The state of PA offers a 5% discount for certification annually which amounts to a nice annual savings. We are proud to say we have 455 days without a lost time accident. Basically, I think your insurance company may be able to help you as ours did with us. Please call our Safety Director, Chris Leh with any questions at 717-428-3939 x30.
