Today, MAPP held an information conference call focused on 7 major resin families. Professionals from Resin Technology, Inc. and PolyOne Distribution were on hand to give details about the raw materials market place which included 30, 60, and 90 day outlooks.
One major issue reinforced several times during the discussion was the fact that there is "very small amount" of raw material in the entire supply chain.
As a provoking thought, when a producer shuts down a reactor at the very beginning of the process, one must understand that it will take weeks for that reactor to begin pumping out enough material to meet down stream demand!
One tactic that can be used by plastics processors is to feverishly work with their end customers to determine their forecasts. Although this might be "pie in the sky" thinking, having more insight as to what the future holds in terms of needs for plastics parts should help every processor better deal with resin supply issues.
