John:
You may be able to search U.S. Patents and Published Applications the Patent Office web site at www.uspto.gov. However, the search engine is relatively simple (so you may miss something if you don't use the right search term(s)) and the database is limited to the full text of patents back only to 1976 (so you can't search the text of older patents).
In addition, an invention's patentability can be challenged based upon any publication anywhere in the world, or upon things that have been in public use or on sale in the United States, so a search limited to U.S. Patents and Published Applications gives only a general indication of the state of the art.
If you need help with this, give me a call at my direct dial number 614-462-1055.
