I’m trying to do some benchmarking and would like to know if it is a common or a rare occurrence for a medium sized plastics manufacturing company to achieve 1,000,000 work hours without a serious (lost time) accident.

Hello Lisa,

I've toured some companies over the years that were medium sized that had several hundred thousand lost time hours.

I do know someone that works as a Safety Coordinator at a medium size molder who has been in her position for many years and different types of environments.

I'll give you a call tomorrow to give you more details on how to contact her.

At York Imperial we have a state Certified Safety Committee. We offer a paid day off for all Associates upon completion of 1 year with no lost time accidents. So with a 50 employee facility we acheived 300,000 safe worker hours in that period. The 1,000,000 hours would be over 3 years for us and a "stretch". Hope this helps.

PMT has about 80 employees and we are at 317 days without a lost day. 1,000,000 is quite a stretch.

That appears to be rare.  We take safety very serious and did not have any Days Away From Work accidents in 2009.  However, it was our fewest worked hours in a long time.  In 2008 we had one fluke accident, but still had to report 1 DAFW.  It would take us 4 years to reach 1,000,000 hours and I just don't see zero as realistic.  Nice goal to have though!

We have often gone over 1 year (close to 500,000 hrs) with no lost time, and have nearly made 2 years (close to 1,000,000)with approximately 250 team members.  It is very hard to make 1,000,000 hours on a consistent basis when someone falls in the restroom, breaks a hip, and you are charged with a lost time accident.
