We are considering the use of a contract resource that can manage tool builds in Asia, specifically, Taiwan, Korea and China.  The appropriate person will ensure the tool builds are on schedule, tools meet the mold standards and design and the parts are to print.  We would appreciate your experience with this type of arrangement and any contact info for personnel thought highly of.

Mike, I know that Lindsey Hanh of Metro Plastics actually hired an engineer in China to do exactly what you are discussing. His goal was to have a set of eyes on the ground ensuring that progess of tool builds was truly being made.

Mike, we are a MAPP Member and actually specilailze in project management of tooling production in Asia.

If you are considering off-shore tooling in China, you can reduce and even eliminate the risk factors by partnering with us.  We have a very experienced team in China to assure success of any of your tooling projects.

Good evening Mike!

We are a corporate sponsor and thought we might be able to help you with this issue.

I own a shop in USA called extreme tool (www.extremetool.com) but also am president of/own largest share of a shop in China called Cosmos (www.cosmostooling.com) as well. Together, seamlessly, we offer global tooling solutions.

You can see our web site and facility overviews above. I am actually headed there tomorrow, and will be coming back 3/18. We would be happy to help you in any way that we can.

The standard way we handle US Tooling for someone like yourself, is as follows:

A)Contractually, Client would buy mold from Extreme

B)Extreme would support and be responsible for warranty, support, communications, revisions, etc. for LIFE of program. IF there is EVER any issue, it is resolved by extreme/domestically, no excuses, and not treated any different than if we built here to begin with.

C)Extreme would PM and Design Mold, Build at Cosmos and 1st off sample there(1 press internal at this time/adding others), before shipping to Extreme. Extreme then fully validates, confirms, grooms, etc. mold before ship to Client)

D)Our price to Client includes shipping from Asia to Extreme as well as all duties/etc.

E)Cost savings vs. Extreme domestic = apx. 25-30%, to date, client satisfaction and on time delivery rating is nearly 100%

F)Not every program is a candidate for this solution. Capability wise, they are VERY good and can do 70-80-% of what we can complexity wise. Deliveries are 4-6 weeks longer than Extreme when all is said and done.

G)Basically, we try to make it easy on our clients, when off shore is needed. Obviously I have my own shop here, and we sell USA when we can, but Cosmos is a great alternative when needed/requested. Our equipment in China is not fancy, but our plant is neat, clean, organized, and we have highly skilled staff. All my partners are ex ACE Mold senior staff, they know how to build tools. Another thing that is very different about our plant than other China options, is that we are very systems oriented, with identical manufacturing planning and documentation to that found at Extreme. We build to the numbers, and you will find our tools are much more accurate with significantly less cavity to cavity variation/etc. than what is normally found. As a general rule, we build only very high quality tooling/not cheap down and dirty stuff. (just so you understand our niche is generally precision vs. commodity)

H)Molds use only US components (Progressive) as well as German and or USA steel. We do not believe in or use ANY “and equivalents” and do not build custom/BS components.

We can provide may satisfied US references on request. Bob Holbrook of York has used us extensively, and I am sure he would be happy to tell you how this has worked for him to date. (Fellow MAPP Board member/for ref.)

I would be happy to visit your USA plant, bring cosmos samples, and help you to feel comfortable with our solution.

Advise how we can help or if any other questions!
