PFAS Regulatory Implications for the Plastic & Rubber Industries

Presented by Sam Anderson, Environmental Supervisor at U.S. Compliance

Sam Anderson’s PFAS webinar provides critical insight into emerging stormwater and wastewater regulations that are beginning to directly impact plastics & rubber producers. With heightened federal and state-level attention on per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), facilities involved in rubber and plastic molding, forming, and packaging are now considered high-priority sectors for source identification and potential enforcement. PFAS compounds are frequently used in flame retardants, mold release agents, plastic resins, and processing aids. As a result, manufacturers may soon face increased scrutiny from local publicly owned treatment works (POTWs), which are beginning to implement effluent sampling and chemical usage questionnaires as part of EPA’s broader PFAS reduction strategy.

For the rubber and plastics community, the implications are immediate and far-reaching. Anderson emphasizes the need for proactive source identification—such as SDS reviews for PFAS-related compounds and substitution of materials when possible. Facilities may also need to prepare for future permit modifications, develop response plans for PFAS-containing discharges, and potentially invest in costly water treatment systems like granular activated carbon or reverse osmosis. By taking early action, plastics producers can stay ahead of regulatory enforcement and reduce long-term operational risks associated with PFAS contamination.
