Alternatives for Opening Heater Tips

Post by CSPiper331 » Tue Oct 23, 2018 1:46 pm

Currently, we use a propane torch to open clogged heater tips in our injection molding machines. Recently, a heater popped and the setup employee received a 1st degree burn to their forehead. Does anyone have an alternative method or equipment in opening a clogged heater tip?

If you are talking about the tips in the mold, we typically will first try to put cardboard between the open halves of the mold, close the gate and try injection pressure to shoot thru the open mold/tips. If this doesn't work, we split the plates and pull the tips to remove the "plug" of resin which usually has something foreign in it.

For a nozzle tip and the need to use a torch, the technician should be wearing protective sleeves, a face shield and gloves to block any molten plastic from contacting skin. This can be a dangerous process as molten resin can go many places.
