Estimating molding cycle times - Alternatives to SolidWorks Plastics, AutoDesk Moldflow, etc.

Hi, all--

Our company is looking for recommendations of bare-bones plastic flow simulation software. We're mainly interested in using the software to obtain estimates of molding cycle times based on a 3D model.

At this point, we don't need something with tons of bells and whistles--like a fancy GUI, pre-loaded specs for thousands of materials, or mold design suggestions like where to place cooling lines.

Instead we just want a computational "opinion" of fill and cooling time that puts us in the ballpark. Then, when we're quoting projects, we'll predict cycle times using a combination of the software's results together with guesstimates made by our engineering and production team, who are usually pretty accurate.

Do you have experience with software that's an alternative to the big players (i.e., stripped down and more affordable) which works well for this limited purpose? It can be either commercial or open source.

Thanks-- Rich

If you have Solid Works, they have added a melt flow simulator that is reasonably priced as an add on.
